Chef Specialties is a family-owned American manufacturer of pepper mills, salt mills and other spice-grinding products founded in 1940 in Detroit, Michigan. The company describes itself as America's first pepper mill manufacturer. Its corporate history is now connected with the much older Backus Company, a Pennsylvania metalworking manufacturer founded in 1906. Chef Specialties became part of Backus Company in 2004, and the combined operation is now based in Smethport, Pennsylvania.
