The business was founded by Claudia Jean Dutro-Nelson and traces its commercial history to October 31, 1996, when she began using the Claudia Jean name for a shop-at-home clothing service. Its original specialty was women's clothing designed for senior customers, sold at retirement communities, assisted-living facilities, nursing homes, adult day-care centers and home parties. Dutro-Nelson registered the CLAUDIA JEAN SENIOR SIZING trademark for dresses, skirts, blouses, slacks, sweaters, jackets, turtlenecks and vests. The senior-oriented business operated initially from Vancouver, Washington.

The business subsequently evolved into the broader Claudia Jean Collection. A trademark application for THE CLAUDIA JEAN COLLECTION was filed in December 2002 for women's clothing, and by 2004 Dutro-Nelson was expanding the brand into a more complete fashion and accessories line.
