The David Oreck Candle Company launched its direct-selling division in 2011 under entrepreneur David Oreck, best known as the founder of the Oreck vacuum-cleaner business. The candle operation was based at 3500 North O. Henry Boulevard, Greensboro, North Carolina 27405, where candles had reportedly been manufactured for approximately 20 years before Oreck acquired the business. The company produced American-made candles for retail customers, private-label clients, fundraising organizations and its independent salesforce.
The product line included scented soy and vegetable-wax candles, odor-eliminating candles, jar and vase candles, pillar candles, votives, tealights, multi-wick candles, citronella products, wax melts, fragrance warmers, candleholders and home-decor accessories. The company emphasized natural and sustainable wax blends, lead-free wicks and candles designed to burn cleanly and evenly.
Independent representatives were called Scent Specialists and marketed products through home parties, personal sales and online ordering. The opportunity was primarily a single-level party-plan program rather than a conventional MLM with extensive downline commissions. Scent Specialists earned a 25% commission on personal retail sales. Starter kits were offered at $99 and $175, and the $99 introductory kit could be earned by generating $350 in retail sales during the representative's first 30 days.
