The Fuller Brush Company is one of the oldest and best-known names in American direct selling. Founded by Alfred C. Fuller in 1906, the company became famous for the "Fuller Brush Man" and its door-to-door sales of brushes, mops, brooms, cleaning products, and personal-care goods. The company later expanded into catalogs, retail, internet sales, and distributor channels, and after 1985 also used network-marketing techniques as part of its changing sales model.
Fuller Brush remains active as a product brand, but not as the same traditional door-to-door MLM/direct-selling company it once was. Its current website operates as an e-commerce store for home-cleaning, brush, personal-care, pet-care, and household products. Fuller's current dealer program allows approved dealers to buy at wholesale for resale, but the company describes it as a new dealer program that differs from the former distributor program. Dealers are independent contractors, there are no application or annual membership fees listed, and approved dealers receive discount-program details after acceptance.
The company went through several major ownership and structural changes. A 2004 SEC filing for CPAC Inc. described Fuller Brush as part of CPAC's Fuller Brands segment, with direct-selling organizations made up of independent representatives and thousands of representatives in all 50 states. Fuller Brush filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on February 22, 2012, in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, Case No. 12-10714, listing assets and debts each between $10 million and $50 million and 180 employees. The Smithsonian's company-history record states that the company later phased out its independent distributor system and domestic manufacturing operations in 2016 and was sold around January 2018 to Galaxy Brush LLC of Lakewood, New Jersey.
