Gold Canyon Review and Profile

Gold Canyon is a candle and home-fragrance brand founded by Curt and Karen Waisath, who began making candles out of their Gilbert, Arizona, home and formally launched Gold Canyon Candle Co. in June 1997. The company grew into a manufacturer with a 100,000-square-foot facility in Chandler, Arizona, and a network of independent Fragrance Consultants across North America who sold scented candles, wax melts, warmers, room fragrance, and bath and body products through home parties, fundraisers, and personal websites. Today the Gold Canyon brand is owned by Scent Cloud, LLC, operates from Southern California, and sells soy wax candles with cotton wicks primarily through its own website.

Curt Waisath led the company as president and CEO during its early growth, and Karen Waisath served as co-founder. The company later came under private-equity backing, and in June 2015 it named Thomas F. Kelly, a former Chief Executive Officer of Silpada Designs and a former Senior Vice President of Avon Products, as Chief Executive Officer. The announcement of Kelly's appointment included a statement from Joseph G. Phillips, Managing Director of Unique Investment Corporation. In September 2017, Gold Canyon International, LLC, announced the appointment of A.K. Khalil as President and CEO.

The original Gold Canyon International business closed abruptly in March 2020, notifying its field that the shutdown was effective immediately because of insufficient funds, and the Fragrance Consultant program ended with it. Scent Cloud, LLC, later acquired the Gold Canyon name and original fragrance formulas from the former owner's creditors and relaunched the brand in 2022, switching from the paraffin wax used by the original company to soy wax and reintroducing several original fragrances.

Under its original model, Gold Canyon operated as a multilevel party-plan company through independent representatives called Fragrance Consultants. Consultants earned a base commission of approximately 25% on personal sales and could earn additional compensation on the sales of consultants they sponsored as they advanced in leadership rank. Historical materials list a $99 Business Basic starter kit, and the company offered a car program; in 2012 it awarded 22 qualifying leaders Mercedes-Benz vehicles through monthly car allowances tied to team growth and sales performance. The relaunched Gold Canyon no longer operates a multilevel program and now sells through its own website and a single-level affiliate program.
