The Homemaker's Idea Company was founded in 1971 by Madolyn Johnson in the Chicago area. Johnson started the business with $1,500 from her teacher-retirement savings and a $600 loan from a friend and neighbor, creating a home-party company that gave women an opportunity to earn income while working around family responsibilities. The company later operated from Glendale Heights, Illinois, and developed a nationwide field organization of more than 5,000 independent representatives. In 2005, The Homemaker's Idea Company changed its public-facing name to Signature HomeStyles.

The company sold home-decorating and organizational products through in-home demonstrations, catalog sales and later online parties. Its product line included baskets, linens, pillows, candles, wall décor, framed art, table accessories, florals, seasonal decorations and storage products. Signature HomeStyles promoted a decorating approach known as "A-Room-A-Therapy," with consultants demonstrating coordinated ways to organize and decorate customers' homes. The company was formerly a member of the Direct Selling Association and operated in the United States and Canada.

Independent decorating consultants earned retail commissions from customer orders and could receive additional compensation, incentives and recognition based on sales volume and the development of consultant teams. Historical recruiting materials advertised personal-sales commissions of approximately 25% to 30%, free or discounted products, incentive trips and flexible scheduling. Consultants generally began by purchasing a demonstration or business kit containing selected home-decor products and sales materials.

Signature HomeStyles remained under the leadership of the Johnson family for more than five decades. The company informed consultants in April 2025 that it was closing permanently, with field representatives reporting that operations ended immediately and without a conventional wind-down period.
