Initial Outfitters was founded in Auburn, Alabama, in 2006 by Jim and Alicia Storbeck, with Beth Reeves also identified as part of the founding team. The company was built around personalized gifts and accessories and promoted the mission of helping women "make a living that makes a difference." Initial Outfitters joined the Direct Selling Association in May 2007, with Alicia Storbeck serving as chief executive officer and the company's primary DSA contact.

The company initially specialized in monogrammed jewelry but expanded into handbags, scarves, apparel, bath wraps, soaps, candles, baby products, home décor, kitchen accessories and personalized gifts. Products were sold through home parties, catalogs, consultant websites and individual customer orders. Initial Outfitters also partnered with Charlie's Lunch Ministries, using specially designated product sales and fundraising campaigns to support lunchrooms serving impoverished children. By 2015, promotional materials stated that the partnership was funding 17 lunchrooms and an orphanage serving approximately 1,100 children in Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Zambia and India.

Independent Consultants earned retail commissions and could sponsor additional Consultants to build sales teams. Compensation information published during the company's operating years placed personal-sales commissions at approximately 20% to 35%, with another 7% to 14% available on qualifying team sales. Starter kits were offered at $79, $129 and $199, and Consultants paid a $10 monthly fee to remain active and maintain access to their replicated websites. The company also offered free-product credits, sales incentives, recognition awards and travel rewards.
