Kirby Overview
Kirby is a home-cleaning and floor-care company best known for its premium vacuum systems and in-home product demonstrations. The company traces its origins to Jim Kirby, who created his first vacuum cleaner in 1906, and to the Scott & Fetzer manufacturing relationship that helped produce the early Kirby machines. Kirby became a direct-selling business in 1920 and built its reputation around demonstrating the performance and versatility of its cleaning systems directly in customers' homes.
Kirby's core product is the Kirby Home Cleaning System, a multi-function cleaning machine that can be used as an upright vacuum, canister vacuum, carpet shampoo system, hard-floor cleaner, tile and grout scrubber, handheld vacuum, and related home-cleaning system with attachments. The company also sells accessories, filter bags, belts, carpet shampoo, hard-floor cleaners, pet-focused supplies, deodorizers, fragrances, and replacement parts. Kirby promotes its systems around durability, American manufacturing, die-cast aluminum construction, high airflow, HEPA filtration, and a long-running factory rebuild program.
Kirby sells through authorized independent distributors and in-home demonstrations, a sales method that has long separated the company from ordinary retail vacuum brands. Consumers can schedule demonstrations through Kirby's site, locate a distributor or service center, and also purchase certain products and supplies online. The Kirby opportunity is best described as a direct-selling distributor and sales-representative model rather than a conventional party-plan business. It has historically relied on door-to-door canvassing, scheduled in-home demonstrations, distributor training, and salesperson-led product presentations.
The Kirby Company remains active at Kirby.com and is currently listed as a subsidiary of Right Lane Industries, an industrial holding company. Right Lane describes Kirby as a Cleveland-based company that has manufactured home-cleaning systems in the United States for more than 100 years. Kirby continues to maintain a network of distributors and service centers while supporting customers through owner manuals, warranty registration, cancellation information, parts, supplies, and service resources.
Kirby has also faced consumer-protection scrutiny involving its sales practices and independent distributor network. In 2011, the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection and Office of the Attorney General entered into Assurances of Voluntary Compliance with The Kirby Company and Connecticut distributors after allegations that some distributors and representatives used aggressive, high-pressure sales tactics. Kirby admitted no wrongdoing but agreed to changes requiring clearer sales disclosures, distributor education, signed customer permission before in-home demonstrations, review of the customer's three-day cancellation right, and a one-and-a-half-hour limit on in-home demonstrations unless the customer requested additional time in writing. Kirby paid the State of Connecticut $25,000 as part of the resolution.
