METABOLIFE INTERNATIONAL, INC no longer appears to be active as a direct sales company.
Metabolife International operated as a weight-loss and nutritional supplement company that marketed products through independent distributors and direct-sales channels. The company was best known for Metabolife 356, an ephedra-based diet supplement that became one of the most prominent weight-loss products of its era.
Metabolife’s business declined sharply following regulatory action and litigation involving ephedra-containing supplements. FDA declared dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids adulterated in 2004, and Metabolife later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2005. Its non-ephedra assets were acquired by IdeaSphere, and MetaboLife-branded products continued in retail channels, but the original Metabolife International MLM/direct-sales opportunity should be treated as defunct.
Original Npros business profile for METABOLIFE INTERNATIONAL, INC, preserved below for archival purposes:
Metabolife filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2005 after declining sales and extensive ephedra-related litigation. The Los Angeles Times reported that IdeaSphere offered to buy Metabolife's assets and that the company had shifted to ephedra-free weight-control and energy products. IdeaSphere later completed the acquisition of certain Metabolife assets, including core non-ephedra brands such as Metabolife Ultra and Metabolife Complete.
DOJ records state that Metabolife International pleaded guilty to filing false income tax returns and that owner William Bradley pleaded guilty to evading millions of dollars in taxes. Michael Ellis, Metabolife's founder, was charged with making false statements to FDA regarding ephedra safety issues and was later reported sentenced to six months in prison for making false statements to FDA.
