Original Npros business profile for North American Power, preserved below for archival purposes:
North American Power and Gas LLC was founded in Connecticut in 2009 by energy-industry veterans Kerry Breitbart and Carey Turnbull. The company entered deregulated energy markets as an alternative supplier of electricity and natural gas for residential and small-business customers. It grew rapidly through a combination of direct consumer enrollment and person-to-person network marketing. Direct Selling News reported 2012 net sales of $165 million and 2013 net sales of $256 million, with approximately 28,703 independent salespeople in 2013.
Rather than generating or physically delivering electricity to homes, North American Power purchased energy in wholesale markets and sold supply plans to consumers. The customer's existing utility continued to operate the distribution system, deliver the electricity or gas, maintain service lines, and handle outages. The company marketed fixed and variable electricity and natural-gas plans, along with renewable-energy options supported by renewable energy certificates.
North American Power used a multilevel customer-acquisition model in which independent representatives referred new energy customers and enrolled additional representatives. Compensation included customer-acquisition bonuses, residual commissions tied to the continuing energy usage of referred customers, and additional commissions generated through a representative's organization. Direct Selling News classified the company's compensation structure as multilevel and its sales method as person-to-person.
In January 2015, North American Power terminated its North American Power and Thrive customer-referral programs.
