The Federal Trade Commission is sending a second round of refund payments to former AdvoCare distributors who lost money in what the agency alleged was an illegal pyramid scheme.

According to the FTC, 170,571 payments totaling more than $11.4 million are going out to people who accepted a payment in the first round. No claim form is required. Recipients who get a check are asked to cash it within 90 days, and those paid through PayPal are asked to accept the payment within 30 days. The agency did not publish a per-person amount; the totals work out to an average of roughly $67 per payment, though individual amounts can differ.

The FTC sued AdvoCare in 2019, alleging that the company's reward system pushed distributors to focus on recruiting rather than selling to customers, pressured them to buy large quantities of product they could not sell, and exaggerated how much money they could make. The agency said most AdvoCare distributors lost money.

The first round of payments, sent in May 2022, returned more than $137.8 million. The FTC said the second distribution is possible because money remains in the settlement fund. Eligibility was limited to distributors who reached the Advisor level, spent much more on products than they received in rewards, and met other criteria.

Questions about the payments are being handled by the refund administrator, Analytics Consulting, at 1-855-744-1802.
