American Income Life Overview
American Income Life Insurance Company is a Waco, Texas-based life and supplemental-health insurance company founded in 1951 by Harold Goodman and his nephew, Bernard Rapoport, with $25,000 in borrowed capital. The original business was established in Indianapolis as American Income Insurance Company, and American Income Life Insurance Company was organized as a stock company in 1954. Its executive offices moved to Waco in 1958. Beginning in 1961, the company developed a close relationship with organized labor by selling insurance to union members and offering benefits designed for working families. Torchmark Corporation acquired American Income Life for $563 million in 1994; Torchmark later adopted the Globe Life name, and American Income Life now operates as a wholly owned Globe Life subsidiary.
American Income Life sells whole life, term life, final-expense, accident, hospital-indemnity, cancer, critical-illness, and other supplemental insurance. Its Special Risk Division provides blanket accident policies for organizations including 4-H and Cooperative Extension programs, summer camps, colleges, universities, student travel groups, and other youth-serving organizations. The company also distributes no-cost Legacy Will Kits, Child Safe Kits, and accidental-death benefits through relationships with labor unions, credit unions, associations, and affinity groups.
American Income Life uses a direct-selling insurance model built around independently contracted agents and separately operated agency organizations. Agents earn first-year sales commissions, continuing renewal commissions while qualifying policies remain in force, performance bonuses, and incentive awards. Managers can also receive renewal credit when producers within their agencies make sales. The structure includes recruiting, agent development, agency management, and compensation connected to the production of other agents, giving it some characteristics associated with multilevel field-sales organizations. However, it is not a conventional retail-product MLM: agents sell regulated insurance policies, do not purchase inventory for resale, and generally must obtain the applicable insurance licenses before conducting business.
American Income Life remains one of Globe Life's largest distribution operations. The company reported more than four million policies in force and more than $393 million in annualized life-premium sales for 2025. During the first quarter of 2026, the American Income Life Division averaged 11,064 producing agents, generated approximately $459.2 million in life premium, and recorded $101.3 million in net life sales. The company operates in 49 states, Canada, and New Zealand, with National Income Life serving New York. American Income Life held an A, or Excellent, financial-strength rating from A.M. Best as of November 2025.
American Income Life and Globe Life faced federal scrutiny beginning in 2023 and 2024 over allegations involving sales practices by certain independent AIL agents. On July 28, 2025, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania closed its investigation and advised that it would not take enforcement action against Globe Life or American Income Life. Four days earlier, SEC staff separately concluded an investigation of Globe Life and stated that it did not intend to recommend an enforcement action.
