MOXXOR traces its history to New Zealand fishing and aquaculture entrepreneur John Turner. Turner entered the fishing industry in the Marlborough Sounds region in 1975 and became an early producer and international marketer of New Zealand green-lipped mussels. His business shipped its first container of frozen half-shell mussels to the United States in 1982. Turner's sons, James and Jared, joined the family business in the early 2000s, and MOXXOR was founded in New Zealand in 2004. The company entered the United States in 2008 and Japan in 2013. Its current management materials identify John Turner as founder and chief executive officer.
The company became known for a concentrated omega-3 supplement produced from New Zealand green-lipped mussel oil. The formula also includes kiwi-seed oil and sauvignon blanc grape-seed extract and contains fatty acids including EPA, DHA and ETA. MOXXOR promoted its cold-extraction process, New Zealand sourcing and sustainable mussel cultivation as distinguishing features. The product was marketed for human use and was also promoted for dogs, cats, horses and other animals.
MOXXOR originally sold through independent representatives using a network-marketing compensation plan. Representatives received personalized websites and access to a virtual office containing online training, genealogy reports, autoship tracking, commission statements and payment tools. The compensation program paid retail profit, rewards for developing a recurring customer base, unilevel commissions on organizational product volume and targeted bonuses for recruiting, sales growth and leadership development. An early company presentation stated that 50% of commissionable volume would be paid to distributors and promoted automobile and travel incentives in addition to the regular compensation plan.
The MOXXOR product business remains active, but the original distributor opportunity has ended. Moxxor.com now redirects to MoxDirect.com, a conventional Shopify retail store operated by MOXXOR LLC from Laguna Niguel, California.
