Amway said it will restructure U.S. operations and eliminate up to 900 roles in Ada, Michigan, where headquarters sits, and in Buena Park, California. Most of the cuts are expected from the Ada workforce, which totals almost 3,000 people.
The company said it hopes to handle as much of the reduction as possible through voluntary departures, with financial and health-care incentives. Cuts are expected to run through the end of 2021, and some employees will stay into 2022. West Michigan is planned as the global center for nutrition manufacturing.
The company tied the change to heavier spending on nutrition science, innovation, and manufacturing, and to digital tools for social selling and shopping meant to help business owners. Chief executive Milind Pant said the shift continues a focus on healthier lives that goes back to founders Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel, and that the job cuts are a hard consequence of that change.
