Market America Worldwide has sold the SHOP.COM domain name to Shopify, ending the network-marketing company's 15-year ownership of one of e-commerce's best-known web addresses. The company reissued its announcement on October 5 under the corrected headline "Market America Sells SHOP.COM Domain Name to Shopify," updating the fifth paragraph and adding a sixth to its original September 28 release. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Market America said the sale is part of a consolidation of its brands, products, technology and UnFranchise Business under a single domain, MarketAmerica.com. The company relaunched that site on September 22 on Shopify's commerce platform, and it is replacing SHOP.COM as Market America's primary consumer shopping destination, including in international markets such as Taiwan.

"This was the perfect transaction for both companies and, more importantly, it represents the kind of partnership we want for Market America's next chapter," said Loren Ridinger, co-founder and CEO of Market America Worldwide. She said Shopify's technology lets the company "move faster, innovate with AI and deliver better experiences without having to recreate technology that Shopify already does exceptionally well."

Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify, called the deal "a win-win," saying SHOP.COM "is a world-class digital asset that has a natural home at Shopify." Shopify has said separately that owning the domain gives shoppers an easier way to use its Shop app on the web. The company has not said what it paid.

Market America acquired SHOP.COM in 2011 and built it into an international shopping site serving customers and UnFranchise Owners, its independent distributors, and the domain became central to the company's push into social shopping and digital commerce. The address previously changed hands in 2003, when it sold for a reported 3.5 million dollars. Domain broker Andrew Rosener has publicly put the latest price at 100 million dollars, a figure neither Shopify nor Market America has confirmed; if accurate it would exceed the largest publicly reported domain-only sale to date.

The rebuilt MarketAmerica.com adds simplified checkout, revised search and navigation and Atlas, an AI shopping assistant, while keeping programs such as Subscribe & Save, Cashback and the 60-Second Health Quiz. Marc Ashley, president of Market America Worldwide, said the company is bringing its products, brands and UnFranchise Business together as "One company. One identity. One destination."

Founded 34 years ago and based in Greensboro, North Carolina, Market America describes itself as a product brokerage and internet marketing company that sells health and nutrition, beauty, skincare, personal care and home products through independent UnFranchise Owners.
