James competes in the Purple Belt Senior 2 Heavyweight division for those ages 41-45 who weigh between 194.5 and 207.5 pounds. There were 40 competitors from a number of countries in his division in the Pan Am championship. Approximately 2,800 competitors overall participated in the tournament.

James said that going into tournaments, Reliv nutritional supplements help with his mental focus and energy, and following matches, his recovery time has significantly improved since he began using Reliv products.
James teaches martial arts to members of the Air Force, Marines and Navy, as well as to various law enforcement officials around the United States. He is a retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer who has served in three wars. James holds Black Belts in various forms of karate, kung-fu and jiu-jitsu.
