North American Power, which admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement, will make 'charitable donations' to the nonprofit Operation Fuel in equal payments of $100,000 over 26 months. Operation Fuel provides emergency fuel assistance to residents in need.
The investigation was triggered by complaints by consumers that North American Power was offering a low introductory rate that was quickly replaced by a variable rate at substantially higher-than-market prices. The state's consumer counsel urged consumers to avoid energy suppliers with variable rates.
