Nu Skin has also faced regulatory and legal scrutiny. In 1997, the FTC announced a $1.5 million settlement involving alleged unsubstantiated fat-loss and muscle-building claims for certain nutritional supplements. In 2016, the SEC ordered Nu Skin to pay $765,688 in disgorgement, interest, and civil penalties in an FCPA-related matter connected to Nu Skin China. That same year, a federal court approved a $47 million settlement of shareholder claims involving allegations about Nu Skin's China operations; the settlement resolved the claims without a trial finding against the company.
