OPTAVIA is the principal direct-selling brand of publicly traded Medifast, Inc., a Baltimore-based nutrition company whose history dates to 1980. Medifast gradually shifted its coach-based weight-loss business from the Take Shape for Life name to OPTAVIA beginning in the mid-2010s. The program combines portion-controlled foods, structured meal plans, educational materials, habit-building guidance and support from independent coaches.

The company's principal products are packaged foods known as OPTAVIA Fuelings, including shakes, bars, soups, oatmeal, pancakes, snacks and other portion-controlled meals. Clients generally combine Fuelings with home-prepared Lean & Green meals, consisting of lean protein and non-starchy vegetables. OPTAVIA has also expanded into essential amino-acid blends, hydration products and programs focused on weight maintenance and metabolic health.

OPTAVIA operates through a multilevel direct-selling structure. Independent Coaches earn client-support commissions on product orders and can receive additional bonuses and leadership compensation by sponsoring and developing other Coaches. The current integrated compensation plan includes client-acquisition incentives, team-building bonuses, rank advancement and organization-based commissions. OPTAVIA reduced certain client-support commission rates in September 2025 and introduced additional coach incentives in 2026 as it worked to rebuild its field organization.

Medifast generated $385.8 million in full-year 2025 revenue, down approximately 36% from the prior year, as demand weakened and the number of earning Coaches fell. Management has attributed part of the decline to increased competition from GLP-1 weight-loss medications and broader difficulty acquiring new clients. Nicholas Johnson became Medifast's chief executive officer in 2026, succeeding Dan Chard, who remained chairman.
