Cutco Vector Overview
Cutco traces its history to 1949, when Cutco began manufacturing knives in Olean, New York. The brand was originally tied to Alcoa's Wear-Ever Aluminum business, later became part of Alcas Corporation, and became privately held after a 1982 management buyout. In 1985, Alcas acquired Vector Marketing Corporation and made it the company's Cutco marketing subsidiary in the United States. Alcas changed its name to Cutco Corporation in 2009, and Cutco marked its 75th anniversary in 2024.
Cutco remains active as a U.S.-made cutlery and kitchen-products brand. Its product line includes kitchen knives, specialty knives, carving and slicing knives, paring knives, utility knives, scissors, garden tools, cookware, flatware, outdoor knives, and related kitchen accessories. The company continues to manufacture Cutco knives in Olean, New York, and markets the brand around American manufacturing and its "Forever Guarantee."
Vector Marketing remains active as Cutco's direct-selling sales arm. Vector sells Cutco through independent sales representatives in the United States and Canada, using person-to-person demonstrations, virtual appointments, customer referrals, and locally operated Vector offices. Current Vector materials describe the company as a single-level direct sales company rather than a traditional MLM. Representatives earn commissions on sales and are also offered guaranteed base pay for each qualified appointment, whether or not a sale is made. Current materials also state that in-person representatives are loaned a Cutco sample set after training, while virtual representatives can present products online without needing a physical sample kit.
Cutco / Vector's legal and regulatory history includes several employment and recruiting-related matters. In Harris v. Vector Marketing Corporation, a California federal wage-and-hour class action, Vector agreed to a settlement structure with a maximum payment of $13 million involving claims related to unpaid training time and sample knife-kit costs for California sales representatives. In Woods v. Vector Marketing Corporation, a later federal class and collective action filed in 2014, the court granted final approval of a settlement resolving claims involving unpaid mandatory training for Cutco sales representatives.
