In Taipei China, scientists have proposed, through XanGo research, that the xanthone derivative garcinone E, found in the mangosteen, may have strong catatonic effects on gastric, lung and liver cancer cells. Scientists in Japan, by using six pericarp mangosteen xanthones, have discovered that the xanthones inhibit growth on human leukemia cell lines, and recently that another ingredient, alpha-mangostin, could be helpful in the prevention and treatment of cancer. Xanthones were also found to be potent anti-tumor agents by a study in Taiwan, China, making them potential drugs for cancer.
Further XanGo research studies in Thailand, and Okinawa Japan have linked the pericarp (rind) of the mangosteen fruit to chemo-prevention, and again cites alpha-mangostin as having the ability to suppress the development of tumors.
Opponents of the use of the juice recommend that the juice is considered a nutritional dietary supplement and as such, although it may very well make a body ‘feel’ better overall, it is not a medical cure for the diseases it is noted as improving.
