Kannaway, a subsidiary of Medical Marijuana, Inc., said the Finnish Supreme Administrative Court ruled that its Pure Gold hemp oil is not a medicinal product and may be imported. The ruling was issued on October 22, 2021.

Finnish Customs had seized a bottle of Pure Gold in 2018 and treated the import as illegal because the Finnish Medicines Agency lists cannabidiol as a medicinal ingredient. The court said European Union rules require a product to be classed as a medicine case by case, based on therapeutic claims, dosage, and evidence, rather than by a blanket rule for every cannabidiol item.

Chief executive Blake Schroeder said the decision supported Kannaway in its view that Finnish sales were lawful. Managing director of international Janne Heimonen said the company had argued for years that the oil is a nutritional supplement, not a medicine, and hoped the ruling would matter in other European Union countries where medicine agencies had taken a similar view.
