Jerky Direct was founded in 2004 by Roger Ball, an entrepreneur with a long history in both the meat-snack and direct-selling industries, and launched nationally in 2005. Ball had previously founded the King B jerky brand and was also involved in the founding of Melaleuca. Jerky Direct combined those two areas of experience by selling all-natural meat snacks through independent distributors rather than relying primarily on conventional retail distribution. The company was originally based in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
The company's product line centered on beef jerky and other natural meat snacks, including beef, buffalo, turkey, chicken, and pork products, along with specialty items such as fruit snacks and pet treats. Jerky Direct emphasized natural and organic products and marketed some varieties as containing no preservatives, added MSG, nitrites, or artificial ingredients.
Jerky Direct operated through a network marketing model in which independent distributors sold products directly to consumers and could build organizations of additional distributors. Historical company descriptions promoted seven ways to earn income, along with replicated websites, marketing tools, training, and distributor support. Later versions of the compensation plan paid commissions through multiple levels of a distributor's organization and encouraged representatives to build recurring customer and distributor groups around regular jerky purchases.
The original Jerky Direct operation declined over time and announced that it was closing in July 2016. A group led by Daniel Jay subsequently acquired the business and relaunched Jerky Direct in August 2016, with Jay serving as CEO and owner. The relaunched company continued selling jerky through network marketing from Minnesota. BBB records list Jerky Direct, LLC as having been formed on July 22, 2016, with Daniel Jay identified as CEO.
Jerky Direct later discontinued its network marketing program and shifted away from the MLM business model.
Members earn a 7 level payout on the monthly committed purchase by members ($12.00 an up) which covers hosting, plus 5% on all additional sales on first level, and 20% on all retail sales generated through personal site.
